HEBREW TABERNACLE CONGREGATION Cantorial Intern Michelle Rubel |
|
Michelle Rubel is a fourth
year Cantorial student studying at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion. She is pleased to be joining the Hebrew Tabernacle family as a
Cantorial Intern. Born and raised on Long
Island, Michelle was an active member of her home synagogue, Temple Emanu-El
(now Temple Am Echad) in Lynbrook, NY. This strong and committed Jewish
community fostered in her a love of Judaism and encouraged her to take on
leadership roles in the Temple’s youth programs. She was also a keen
participant in NFTY throughout high school. After spending the summer of 2001
at the URJ Kutz Camp in Warwick, NY, a learning institute for Reform Jewish
teens, Michelle decided to pursue the Cantorate. For her, to become a Cantor
meant combining her desire to serve the Jewish community with her life-long
musical pursuits. After graduating from Hewlett
High School, Michelle attended Syracuse University. There she majored in
voice performance with a minor in Judaic studies. She was also a member of
the Hillel student board and a founding member of SU’s only Jewish a capella
group. During her college years, Michelle also worked as a counselor at URJ
Crane Lake Camp in West Stockbridge, MA. She was thrilled to be able to
return in the summer of 2009 as the co-director of the Limud (Jewish
education) program. Directly following graduation,
Michelle began her studies at HUC-JIR. While at HUC, she has had the
opportunity to participate in a variety of enriching and exciting programs.
During her first year studying at HUC’s Jerusalem campus, Michelle took part
in the FSU Pesach Project, traveling to Belarus to help lead Passover seders
around the country. This past summer, she has been completing a unit of clinical
pastoral education (CPE), a chaplaincy training course, at North Shore
University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. Also during this summer, Michelle
traveled to Germany with HUC in a program called Germany Close Up, which
gives young American Jews the opportunity to encounter German Jewry, both
past and present. As the grandchild of German-Jewish immigrants, this trip
was informative and also deeply personal. She hopes all of these experiences
will add to her Cantorial training. Michelle enjoys movies and
television, and is a committed Mets fan. She is very much looking forward to
this year, and the opportunity to sing, pray, learn, and celebrate with the
community of Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation. \ |
